COSCA Supervision Course (May 2026)

Written by COSCA, this is a two part student-centred, experiential course. There is an interactive mix of skills, training and practice, small group work, tutor input and large group discussion with a focus on increasing supervision knowledge, skills, personal growth and self-awareness.
Two levels of certification are offered: COSCA Certificate in Counselling Supervision Skill
Participants require, the COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate (or equivalent) with a minimum of 2 years, or 450 hours in practice.
This course consists of twelve taught units, giving practitioners an in-depth understanding of supervision and how to use it effectively. These units cover elements of theory, including unconscious processes; supervision skills, including creative practice; professional development and ethical practice.
The Certificate can be completed in its own right or used as the first step in gaining the Certificate in Counselling Supervision.
Assessment includes: 100% attendance of the training units; a Supervisor Information Form; Observation of the Supervisor Essential Skills; a transcript of ten minutes of supervision with analysis and conclusion.
On successful completion, this certificate enables practitioners to provide professional counsellors with individual supervision. This course is equivalent to 10 credits at SCQF Level 9.
Participants require a Diploma in Counselling (or equivalent) and substantial counselling experience. This part of the course, which is in addition to the Skills Certificate, involves supervisory work. You must be in a position to supervise at least two counsellors/counselling skills users and submit a 2000- 2500 word case study based on your work as a supervisor. Participants are responsible for finding their own supervisees and their own supervisor, in accordance with the COSCA criteria. Assessment includes; 2000-3000 word case study; a Supervisor Report Form; a Supervision Log of clients seen. All must be completed within 12 months of completing the taught course.
